Genus - Alcea
Alcea is also known as Hollyhock. The Genus contains over 60 species. Alcea is derived from the Greek alkaia meaning cure. Alcea can be annual or biennial and are native to Europe and Asia. Some of the biennial forms reseed so readily that many people think of them as perennial.
The Hollyhock was one of the first plants brought to the American colonies from Europe. In Kyoto, Japan the Hollyhock Festival is one of the three main festivals of the city.
Culture - Grow Alcea in full sun to mostly sun. Good air circulation and drainage is essential.
