When can I plant my annuals?
The average last hard frost date for Bethel Park is May 1. This means half of the time we will have a hard killing frost after this.
The 90% date is May 17th. This is the date after which you will have a killing frost only one in ten years. This is the date that we recommend for planting annuals. If you get to May 10 and the weather forecast has no lows predicted below 40 for the next week you may want to go ahead and plant.
If you do get caught with an oncoming frost after planting it is probable that you can save your plants if you cover with cloth. Old bed sheets work well for this. Plastic does not. Put your sheets on in mid- afternoon to better preserve some of the daytime heat.
